The 2003 Young Decorator of the Year Competition was hailed as a great event with the 13 competitors giving their best and producing a finished testpiece that had been designed to reflect the new and the old from 1829 and Stephenson's Rocket to the high speed trains of today. With the further skills of paperhanging and the application of Water based acrylics the competitors were kept busy during the 17 hour competition.

The added pressure of being under the gaze of the visiting public did not deter the 13 finalists who came from all corners of the UK. During the three day event locals schools visited the various competitions on display and the youngsters were encouraged to "Have a go" at displaying their artistic talents to draw a smoke cloud and have it pinned on the wall beneath a prize of a bike going to the best effort.

Runner up Wayne Shand and Gold Medalist Graeme McNeil

ANGUS COLLEGE students from Brechin spent part of their Easter holidays doing something different – winning Gold and Silver medals at a prestigious national competition, to be precise! The painting and decorating students were taking part in the Young Crown Decorator of the Year event at North Glasgow College in Springburn.

Graeme McNeil of Brechin, an apprentice with the city firm of J S Hawke & Son, who took the Gold Medal, was closely followed by fellow Brechiner and fellow student Wayne Shand, a second-year apprentice with Angus Decorating Group.

Said Angus College’s Head of Art, Craft & Design Kevin Murphy: “This is a fantastic result for the College, and for Brechin. Graeme is no stranger to winning, as he was placed first in the Scottish Association of Painting Craft Teachers event last year.

Graeme will now have some time to prepare for the UK finals of the Young Decorator of the Year and Skillbuild Competition which will held in Darlington in October of this year. The finals are held over three days and Graeme will represent Scotland in a display of practical decorating skills.
