SKILLBUILD BACKGROUND
Founded in 1981, SKILLBUILD is the National Competition for young people training within the construction industry.
The competition is organised by SKILLBUILD Competitions Limited, a non- profit making construction skills and training promoter , with an independent Steering Committee drawn from all sectors of the industry.
The competition is endorsed by the Construction Industry Training Board, The Department for Education and Skills and UK Skills and the major sponsors include Hanson Brick, Akzo Nobel (Crown Trade Paints) British Gypsum and Makita Tools.
Each year trainees are invited from Colleges of Further Education and independent training centres throughout the United Kingdom, initially to take part in a series of regional competitions. Regional Competitions are designed to isentify the best regional competitor to take part in the National Competition.
In 2003 twelve regional competitions are planned, which include events in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
The National Competition identifies the best young trainee in the United Kingdom within each trade discipline.
Regional competitions determine the finalists who take part in the SKILLBUILD National Final Competition, which takes place annually.
The 2003 National Final Competition took place in Darlington College on the 8th - 10th October 2003.
Ultimately in some skill categories competitiors go forward to represent the United Kingdom in the World Skills Competition (Skill Olympics)
The World Skills Competition is held every two years in one of the 35 World Skills member countries.
The SKILLBUILD competitions held in 2002 and 2003 will provide the competitiors for selection for the World Skills competition to be held in Finland in 2005.
