The 2005 SAPCT Craft Competition

This year's National Practical Competition was held at Edinburgh's Telford College, on 2nd June 2005

Ray Harris, Principal & Chief Executive of the host college welcomed competitors to the last Painting & Decorating competition to be held on these premises as by next January a new college will be completed and ready for occupation.

The craft competition was judged by Richard Haigh, President of the SAPCT and Peter Rattray, Senior Painting Contracts Officer for East Lothian District Council.

For the third year running the main sponsors were TOR Coatings Ltd who had indicated their willingness to continue their association with these premier painting Competitions held in Scotland annually.

As usual in this competition the competitors compete in teams of two and this year they worked on three walls of a cubicle and displayed their skills in hanging wallpaper, preparing, setting out, geometric shapes, colour mixing and sponge stippling


A colourful testpiece set a challenge for the nine teams

The testpiece devised by SAPCT President Richard Haigh challenged the competitors to plan and complete the task in only five hours. At the award ceremony later Richard said “these youngsters really worked hard, giving it everything they had and produced a good quality of work at the same time".

For the third year running the winning team came from Edinburgh’s Telford College. Second year apprentices Mark Nevin employed by Nevin of Edinburgh Ltd and his teamate Chris Blake employed by Mardon Decorating Services, Livingstone. took the top prize. They were presented with Scottish Decorators Federation Trophy, the George Nicolson Award for Craft Excellence along with an trade tools and a cash prize.

President of the SAPCT, Richard Haigh, thanked Edinburghs Telford College for hosting the event. He wished to thank the main sponsors, TOR Coatings, in particular for their continued support of the event and acknowledged the support of various individuals on the day.

The 2004 SAPCT Craft Competition

This year's National Practical Competition was held at Angus College, on 3th June 2004

Angus College situated in the coastal town of Arbroath was the venue for this years Scottish Association of Painting Craft Teachers National Apprentice Competitions.

Craft and Advanced Craft competitions ran simultaneously over five hours and this year they were judged by Scottish Decorators Federation members and SAPCT officials.

For the second year running the main sponsors were TOR Coatings Ltd who indicated there willingness to continue their association with the premier painting Competitions held in Scotland annually.

In the craft competition the competitors compete in teams of two and this year they worked on three walls of a cubicle and displayed their skills in hanging wallpaper, preparing, setting out and applying stencils and basic brush graining of a dado.


Craft Competitors get busy

The five hour testpiece devised by SAPCT President Richard Haigh challenged them to plan and complete the task and to their credit almost all of the ten competing teams finished the exercise. Richard said later “these were talented youngsters who produced a good quality of work and enjoyed the experience at the same time”.

The winning team came from Edinburgh’s Telford College. Second year apprentice Gary Irvine employed by Protective and Decorative Specialist Coatings Ltd teamed up with first year apprentice Mark Nevin, employed by Nevin of Edinburgh, to take top prize. The lads were presented with a new Scottish Decorators Federation Trophy, the George Nicolson Award for Craft Excellence along with an array of trade tools. Martin Hobbs, lecturer from the winning college said “ we had high hopes for Gary and Mark, we knew they would make a strong team, they were determined to do well and they certainly achieved their aim”

President of the SAPCT, Richard Haigh, thanked the Principal Burt of Angus College for hosting the event and in particular, Kevin Murphy, Mike Swan and Charlie Cameron in the P& D Department for all their efforts in preparing for the competition.

The 2003 SAPCT Craft Competition

National Practical Competition was held at Ayr College on 5th June 2003
The testpiece was 5 hours in duration and kept the competitors busy with a range of skills including paperhanging to an upper wall and dado area finished with a horizontal border, a large rag rolled panel, a multi- coloured sponge stippled panel, stencil cutting and application, gloss paint and eggshell painting of 4 panel doors, along with the lettering of the TOR Coatings Logo.

The competition testpiece was prepared by John Macdonald and he was joined by Andy Foster and Nigel Ratcliffe from the Main Sponsors TOR Coatings for the judging of the event.

David Stewart is a second year apprentice and is employed by George Nicolson Decorators of Salamander Street in Edinburgh. His team mate Lynda Caldwell is also in the second year of her apprenticeship and she is employed by McEwan Decor in Peffer Place Edinburgh.
